In 2008 we heard that in recessionary times, one product that always does well is lipstick. Why lipstick? Because it is a relatively inexpensive purchase that always makes you feel and look better. If you can no longer afford to go out to a nice restaurant for dinner on a Saturday night – stay home, order in pizza, and wear your new lipstick. You will feel better.
In 2009 nail polish replaced lipstick as every woman’s must have beauty item. Some theorized that this was due to the variety of nail polish offerings – an amazing array of colors, finishes, and price points.
Anyone thinking of starting a business would be wise to contemplate the simplicity of such an idea. What product would do well because it makes us feel better about ourselves and can be offered in a wide variety of shapes and sizes while not breaking the bank? Apparently one answer to this question is: dog food.
